Lachy is cunning and knows when to look dumb in order to make himself look like less of a threat. Maintaining a certain level of indifference keeps him under the radar, which is what he prefers. He has just enough charisma to convince most people to trust him, and while he's not a good guy, he's not entirely bad either. There are lines that he will not cross, i.e. he'll rob you blind, but rarely through force or violence. Beneath the street slang and sleaze, he's really just a kid who never fit in and is still looking for his place in the world.
- When he decided he would do whatever he had to in order to survive.
Born out of wedlock, Lachy never knew his father and two years after his birth, his biological mother put him up for adoption, having struggled down to her last dollar and unable to provide. By that time, he was in poor health and his foster placement was delayed as he spent time in the pediatric ward recovering. When he was healthy enough to be placed, he went to a foster family that used him to collect government stipends until he turned five and the monthly allowance dropped. At that time, the church took him in as a ward of the boarding school.
During the summer months, he was fostered in respite care homes. Many families in this line of fostering ended up seeking to adopt the children staying with them, but not the families that Lachy stayed with. He was a trouble maker. Mostly due to the ill-humor of a child that had never been taught better, he pulled puppy tails and drew on the walls. He slammed doors, faught with other kids, and stomped about in flower beds, seemingly hellbent on being distructive. It wasn't until he was ten that a family from America showed interest in adopting him.
The initial process took a year and he almost backed out once, afraid to board the plane more than anything. He would be leaving the country in which he was born and have to adjust to new family, friends, home, school- everything - but finally, he was in his adoptive home at age eleven and a half.
His new parents had taken countless hours of adoption education classes for raising an older child of the system and it showed. Lachy's behavior started to turn around, despite his initial phase of rebellion. He saw that they never got angry with him as he was used to and became more willing to obey, even starting to seek their praise.
That was all well and good, but Lachy wasn't the only child in the home. He had an older brother, Brenden, who was a biological son. Brenden had grown out of the "wanting-a-little-brother" phase by the time the adoption was finalized and didn't care much for Lachy. At first, he showed little interest, but then when they were alone, he had a tendency to be violent. At first, Lachy hid the bruises, afraid to rock the boat. When the abuse became sexual and steadily grew worse, Lachy eventually went to his parents for help.
They were understandably shocked and doubtful, but to their credit they gave him the benefit of the doubt. However, an investigation brought up no hard proof and their fragile support turned to scorn, defending their blood son against Lachy's accusations. He was sent away in disgust and returned to the foster system where he would stay until he aged out.
At eighteen, he was put out on the streets with a parting sum of $300. Of course, that didn't last long and the homeless, unemployed young man decided he only had two choices: prostitution or theft. He chose the latter. His crime of choice for a quick buck was purse snatching, but over time he learned some discipline and eventually mastered pick pocketing, though he also broke into quite a few parked cars along the way.
It was bound to happen sooner or later...he got caught red handed. But instead of pressing charges, the individual made a proposal: if Lachy came to work for him, he would never mention the broken car window again. As it turned out, this supposed benefactor was a horse man. He had a few racing Thoroughbreds and needed a groom, but more importantly, he needed someone invisible who could act as an underground booky.
After getting the hang of the underground business, Lachy ventured off on his own and is currently drifting.
